The Miami Dolphins informed Tua Tagovailoa today that the team plans to release Tagovailoa at the beginning of the NFL league year on Wednesday. The Dolphins will incur a dead cap hit of approximately $99 million with the release, which will be an NFL record. Later today, the Atlanta Falcons emerged as the likely landing spot for Tagovailoa,.
As the Dolphins are clearing cap space, the team also reportedly will be trading Minkah Fitzpatrick to the New York Jets in exchange for a late round draft pick. The Jets reportedly plan to sign Fitzpatrick to a new three-year deal to spread his cap charge beyond the current season. Fitzpatrick is set to make approximately $15 million this season.
In NFL free agent news, Josh Jobe will be re-signing with the Seattle Seahawks on a 3-year, $24 million deal. Christian Harris appears to be headed to the Atlanta Falcons after four seasons with the Houston Texans.
In a surprise to many NBA insider, the Brooklyn Nets declined to offer Grant Nelson a second 10-day contract. Nelson’s 10-day contract expired yesterday. Nelson, by all accounts, played well in his first two games with the Nets, but only played a combined five minutes in the next three games.
