Alexa Guarachi continued her march into uncharted territory at the French Open, as she and Desirae Krawczyk won their quarterfinal match against 7-seed Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara in straight sets (6-0, 6-4). Guarachi becomes the first Alabama women’s tennis alum to reach the semifinals of a grand slam event, and joins former Alabama men’s tennis star Ellis Ferreira as the only Alabama players to reach a grand slam semifinal (Ferreira last did it at the 2000 U.S. Open). Guarachi and Krawczyk will face Iga Świątek and Nicole Melichar on Friday.
Pia Rijsdijk scored two goals in the first 11 minutes, and Arna-Bjørnar held on to defeat KIL/Hemne 2-0 in the first round of Norway’s annual Women’s NM Cup. Arna-Bjørnar advances to the quarterfinals, which will be played in November.
