Former Alabama walk-on Rowdy Harrell, who was a member of the 2009, 2011, and 2012 national championship teams before embarking on a career as a member of a NASCAR pit crew, was killed in a car accident last night in the Florida Keys. Harrell’s wife of three days, Blakley, was also killed. The two were married this past weekend and were traveling to the Keys for their honeymoon. The accident happened on Lower Matecumbe Key.

Harrell was hired by Hendrick Motorsports performance director Chris Burkey, who was a Miami Dolphins scout during Nick Saban’s tenure, not long after finishing his degree. Harrell would serve as a tire carrier for the 88 car team during Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s final years as a driver, and for Alex Bowman the past couple of seasons. He was also part of two Xfinity Series championship teams with Earnhardt’s JR Motorsports.
