The Los Angeles Dodgers announced tonight that Jimmy Nelson is being added to the 40-man roster, a precursor to making the team’s major league roster when it breaks camp in the next week. Nelson signed with the Dodgers following the 2019 season, but missed all of 2020 with arm and shoulder injuries. Nelson then re-signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers this past off-season when his option was not picked up. He’s been flawless this spring, pitching 7 scoreless innings and exhibiting signs of his 2017 season that ended prematurely with the shoulder injury. Nelson figures to start the season in the Dodgers’ bullpen. His contract calls for a base of $1.25 million, and could reach $3.75 million if incentives are met.
At the other end of the 40-man roster spectrum, Wade LeBlanc exercised his opt-out clause in his contract with Baltimore on Wednesday, and Baltimore granted him his release today. LeBlanc is now a free agent, though the Oriole organization didn’t rule out bringing him back on a minor league deal if he didn’t sign elsewhere. LeBlanc allowed just 2 runs in 8 innings of work this spring, as he worked his way back from an elbow fracture that ended his 2020 season prematurely.
Jarran Reed indicated in a tweet this evening that he’ll be released or traded by Seattle sometime tomorrow. Reed is entering the second year of a 2-year, $23 million contract in 2021, and Seattle can save $8.5 million against the cap by releasing him. Reed will have no shortage of suitors if he isn’t traded.
Stephanie Meadow and Kristen Gillman both got off to hot starts at the LPGA’s Kia Classic in Carlsbad, California today. Meadow shot a -4 68, and is sitting T-3rd, 2 shots off the pace. Gillman is T-9th at -2.
- Jimmy Nelson – contract selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- Wade LeBlanc – exercised opt-out clause in his contract and was released by the Baltimore Orioles.
- Ryan Anderson – signed to a 1-year contract by the New York Giants (announced today).
