Alexa Guarachi and Erin Routliffe both reached the women’s doubles quarterfinals with straight-set wins over seeded opponents at Wimbledon today. It marks the first time two Alabama tennis players have reached the quarters of the same Grand Slam event. Both advance to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time in their careers. For Guarachi, it’s the third time she’s advanced to at least the quarterfinals in a grand slam event (she previously reached 2020 French Open finals and the 2021 US Open semifinals). It is Routliffe’s first trip to the quarterfinals in a grand slam event.
Kristian Gkolomeev captured the gold medal in the Men’s 50m Freestyle at the Mediterranean Games with a swim of 21.91 seconds.
It came a day late due to an in-game power failure yesterday, but Retin Obasohan and the Belgian National Team defeated Serbia in come-from-behind fashion to in FIBA World Cup qualifying. Belgium finishes 2nd in Group A with a 4-2 record, and advances to the second stage of qualifying. Obasohan had 16 points and 6 assists in the win.
