News

As was widely expected in league circles, DeMeco Ryans was named head coach of the Houston Texans this afternoon. An introductory press conference will be held on Thursday. Ryans gets a six-year contract, which gives him more time and security to turn around a franchise that has been struggling for several years.

For Ryans, it’s a homecoming to the team that drafted him in the second round of the 2006 draft. Ryans spend 6 of his 10 playing seasons in Houston, before finishing his career in Philadelphia.

Ryans has had a meteoric rise through the coaching ranks. He joined the San Francisco 49ers staff in 2017 as a quality control analyst, then served as inside linebackers coach for three years before ascending to the defensive coordinator position for the past two seasons. He was named Pro Football Writers of America Assistant Coach of the Year this season.

The USFL’s Pittsburgh Maulers officially announced the signing of Reuben Foster today. Foster is attempting to return from a devastating compound knee injury suffered during OTA’s with Washington in 2019 that caused him to spend two seasons on Injured Reserve.

The injury report on Landon Dickerson is good. Dickerson suffered a hyperextension of his right elbow late in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game, and was wearing a brace after the game. An MRI today showed no structural damage, and he is expected to play in the Super Bowl.

A Super Bowl win would put DeVonta Smith in exclusive company.
