Quanesha Burks finished second in the Women’s Long Jump at the USATF Outdoor Championships, and earned a spot on Team USA for next month’s World Athletics Championships in Belgrade. Burks, who had previously satisfied the world championship standard, maxed out at 6.82 meters on her final jump. In other Outdoor Championship finishes, Shelby McEwen (Men’s High Jump) and Daniel Haugh (Men’s Hammer Throw) also posted second place finishes, but won’t be added to Team USA until they meet the standards for their events. Tamara Clark, who finished 4th in the Women’s 100 Meter, could be added to the team for relay events.
Olivia Fotopoulou and Filippa Fotopoulou Kviten both capped successful weekends at the Cyprus National Senior Championship. Olivia won gold medals in both the Women’s 100 Meter and Women’s 200 Meter, and set a new national record in the 100 Meter with a time of 11.25 seconds. Filippa won gold in the Women’s Long Jump. The sisters also comprised half of the gold medal winning Women’s 4 x 100m Relay team.
Alana Gonçalo Da Silva and her Brazil teammates won the gold medal at the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup. Brazil was undefeated throughout the tournament, beating the United States in both group play and in the championship game.
Benedetta Moresco gets the silver medal at the US Women’s Open for being the amateur with the lowest score at this year’s tournament. Moresco was one of 28 amateurs in the field.
