Justin Thomas, Bud Cauley, and Davis Riley all posted Top 10 finishes at the Valspar Championship. Thomas, who started T-5th, was -3 on the front nine, then reeled off a string of 4 birdies in 5 holes on the back nine to take a 2-stroke lead going to 16. He would bogey 16 and 18, to finish solo 2nd, one shot back. Cauley, who started at T-17th, made a move up the leaderboard early in the round, with 4 birdies on the front nine, and would turn in a bogey-free 66. Cauley and Thomas were briefly in a 3-way tie for the lead before Thomas birdied 12, 14, and 15. Riley, who also started T-5th, fell behind with a double-bogey on 5, but jumped back into contention with an eagle on 11. Ultimately, Thomas finished solo 2nd, Cauley T-4th, and Riley solo 7th.
Justin Thomas’ second place finish is his second solo 2nd finish this season, and his fourth Top 10 finish in 8 starts this season.
Bud Cauley’s T-3rd finish ties his career-best finish on the PGA Tour, and is the fourth time that he has posted a 3rd place finish (with the most recent coming in January 2017). Cauley posts back-to-back Top 6 or better finishes for the first time since July 2012, when he finished solo 4th and T-4th in back-to-back weeks.
Davis Riley’s solo 7th finish is his second Top 10 finish on the season.
