Today was Opening Day across the majors, and this year sees five Alabama players begin opening day in the majors: Alex Avila (Washington), Matt Foster (Chicago White Sox), Wade LeBlanc (Baltimore), Jimmy Nelson (Los Angeles Dodgers), and Spencer Turnbull (Detroit). LeBlanc’s game was canceled due to weather, and Avila’s due to COVID concerns.
It wasn’t the outing he wanted, but Jimmy Nelson finally made his Dodger debut, as he appeared in a major league game for the first time since September 2019. Nelson spent last season in the Dodger organization, but missed the season with arm and back injuries.
Spencer Turnbull, who actually begins opening day on the non-baseball injured list, has cleared COVID protocols, and has rejoined the team’s facilities in Lakeland. Turnbull will throw a few bullpens in Lakeland before joining the Tigers’ alternate training site in Toledo, as he ramps back up his endurance to rejoin the team in Detroit.
