Daily Recap – August 24, 2021


The buzz around Mac Jones potentially taking over the starter role in New England picked up momentum, as his workload increased even more with the absence of presumed starter Cam Newton, including compliments from veteran teammates like Matthew Slater and Jonnu Smith, among others, that have indicated that Jones has earned their respect.

Julio Jones worked out in pads today for the first time in three weeks. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill and offensive coordinator Todd Downing commented on the importance of getting Jones back before the season gets underway.

Xavier McKinney got extended run in last week’s pre-season game and was given an opportunity to run the defense on the field.

Andrew Steele has been hired as assistant basketball coach at Tennessee Tech University. Steele served last year as an assistant on Mo Williams’ staff at Alabama State, and previously worked with Tennessee Tech coach John Pelphrey at Alabama.

It’s been a foregone conclusion for months (maybe a couple of years) now, but Justin Thomas has officially qualified for the U.S. Ryder Cup team.

Athletes Unlimited Softball Season 2 returns this weekend, and held its first weekly draft tonight. Haylie McCleney was selected by Team Osterman in the first round of tonight’s draft.

Community Outreach

Mark McMillian will be hosting two events in the Philadelphia area on August 26. The first will be football camp in the morning for 6th-9th grade children. In the evening, he’ll be hosting grilling exhibition and bourbon and beer tasting. Proceeds will benefit McMillian’s LIFT Program.

Media Appearances

Jalen Hurts spoke to the media following the joint practice with the Jets today (Hurts appears at the 15:00 mark). He commented on his Alabama t-shirt, and discussed his love for throwing to DeVonta Smith and the other Eagle receivers.

Ryan Kelly made his first media appearance since returning to practice from an elbow injury. He says that his elbow is “a little bionic,” but good to go.

The Bama Standard tonight featured Glen Coffee, Ken Darby, Derrick Lassic, and Trent Richardson.
