News

Derrick Henry rushed for 182 yards, added 55 yards receiving, and scored 3 second-half touchdowns to lead Tennessee to a 33-30 overtime victory in Seattle. Henry surpassed 6,000 career rushing yards (now has 6,100). Henry’s 35 carries were the most in his career. Henry also now has 10 games of 150+ yards rushing and 2+ touchdowns, which ties Barry Sanders for 3rd most all-time.

Julio Jones had 128 receiving yards today, marking the 59th time in his career he has reached the 100 yard plateau. That ties Marvin Harrison for 3rd most all-time. Jones also surpassed 13,000 career receiving yards today in his 137th game, which is the fewest games needed to reach 13,000 yards in NFL history. Jones now sits at 13,053 yards.

Alex Avila plans to retire as a player at the conclusion of the 2021 season. Avila, a 13-year veteran, apparently has a desire to continue to work in baseball in some capacity in the future.

Tua Tagovailoa left today’s game with bruised ribs after taking a shot on the second series in the first quarter. X-rays were negative, but Tagovailoa will have an MRI tomorrow to check for any tissue damage.

Several players made season debuts in the NFL today: Dre Kirkpatrick, Andre Smith, Carson Tinker, Lester Cotton, and Landon Dickerson. Kirkpatrick appeared in his first game with the 49ers, who signed him this week. Smith, who has twice been released by the Ravens without having appeared in a game, finally played in a game for Baltimore after opting out last year. Carson Tinker, signed by Tampa Bay this week, appeared in an NFL game for the first time since 2018 Week 5. Cotton, whose previous NFL career consisted of 1 special teams play in 2019, was elevated from the practice squad this week and played for the Raiders. Landon Dickerson made his professional debut after being inactive last week.

Janie Jackson won the rain-shortened Guardian Championship by four strokes. The event was reduced to 36 holes due to unplayable conditions. The win is Jackson’s second career win on the Symetra Tour.

Retin Obasohan had 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals to lead Hapoel Jerusalem to a quarterfinal win in the Winner Cup today. Semifinal play in the Winner League’s pre-season tournament resumes on Friday.
