Alabama Pro Athlete of the Week – Jereem Richards (August 8)

Your Alabama Pro Athlete of the Week is Jereem Richards. Richards ran a personal best 19.80 seconds in the Men’s 200 Meter to win the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Richards broke a 28-year-old Games record in the process. Richards would also win gold in the 4×400 Meter Relay.

Runner-up this week is Erin Routliffe. Routliffe and partner Jessie Pegula won the Women’s Doubles title at the Citi Open, marking Routliffe’s first win of 2022 and her 2nd career WTA title. Due to rain delays, Routliffe and Pegula had to win 3 matches in 18 hours to secure the title.

Others of note:

Saketh Myneni and partner Yuki Bhambri won the doubles title at the ATP Lexington Challenger. Myneni wins his fourth Challenger title this year, and a career-best seven total titles in 2022. Myneni now has 31 career professional titles.

Brett Auerbach homered 3 times, had 2 4-hit games, and a 6 RBI game. The 2 4-hit games were the 2nd and 3rd such games of his career, and the 6 RBI game ties a career high. He also had a career-high 3 doubles in the 6 RBI game. For the week, Auerbach was 9-for-20, with three homers, three doubles, three walks, nine RBI, six runs scored and two stolen bases. Auerbach was named Eastern League Player of the Week.

Haylie McCleney homered twice, and also reached base in 9 consecutive plate appearances in Athetes Unlimited Softball play. McCleney moved up to second place in the league’s individual point standings.

Annika Zeyen completed the sweep of gold medals at the UCI Para-Cycling World Cup in Quebec City, Canada this weekend. Zeyen, who competes in the Handbike 3 classification, won both the timed trial and the road race competitions.

Polly Mack finished solo 3rd at the French Lick Charity Classic for her 2nd career Top 5 in 5 professional starts (4 Epson Tour, 1 Ladies European Tour).

Natassha McDonald won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games as part of Canada’s Women’s 4×400 Meter Relay team, and also reached the finals of the Women’s 200 Meter.

Remona Burchell won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games as part of Jamaica’s Women’s 4×100 Meter Relay team

Georgia Inglis won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games as part of Australia’s Women’s 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball team.

Bo Hedges won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games as part of Canada’s Men’s 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball team.

Joy Haizelden won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games as part of England’s Women’s 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball team.

Landon Green made his professional debut and struck out 5 batters in 2.1 innings of work.

Alex Amankwa reached the finals in the Men’s 800 Meter at the Commonwealth Games.

Abigail Kwarteng reached the finals in the Women’s High Jump at the Commonwealth Games.

Filippa Fotopoulou reached the finals in the Women’s Long Jump at the Commonwealth Games

Kirani James finished 2nd in the Men’s 400 Meter at the Diamond League event in Poland.

Kimberley Ficenec finished 2nd in the Women’s 1000 Meter at a meet in Austria.

Dylan Smith threw 3 scoreless innings, giving up just 2 hits.

Sam Gardner picked up a win and a save, and struck out 6 batters in 3 scoreless innings of work.

Chase Lee worked 3 scoreless innings, and has now allowed just 1 earned run in his last 10 innings of work.

Peyton Wilson had a 4-for-4 game and reached base 5 times in the game.

Tyler Gentry had 3 mult-hit games, as well as 2 games where he reached base 4 times.

Matt Foster worked 3 scoreless innings, and has now worked scoreless frames in 8 of his last 9 appearances.

Alana Gonçalo da Silva was part of the gold medal winning Brazil team at the FIBA South America Women’s Championship.

Davis Riley finished T-13th at the Wyndham Championship.

Davis Shore finished T-13th at the Quebec Open.

Steven Hudson won the Alabama State Senior Match Play Championship.
