Daily Recap – August 14, 2022

Robby Shelton, T-5th entering the final round of regular-season-ending Pinnacle Bank Championship, shot a final round 65 to win the event by 1 stroke. Shelton became the only two-time winner on the Korn Ferry Tour this season. Though Shelton had already mathematically clinched his PGA Tour card for the 2022-23 season, the win moves him up from 9th to 2nd in the Top 25 regular season final rankings, which will give him higher priority going into the PGA Tour fall events. The win is Shelton’s fourth career win on the Korn Ferry Tour.

Trey Mullinax made a run at the FedEx St. Jude Championship today, before ultimately settling for a T-5th finish in the first event of the FedEx Cup playoffs. The FedEx Cup playoffs are cut to Top 70 for next week’s BMW Championship. Mullinax, along with Justin Thomas and Davis Riley, will advance. Lee Hodges (72nd) and Michael Thompson (97th) are eliminated. Hodges, who shot a 65 today, had worked his way into the Top 70 before bogeying the 18th hole today.

On the strength of a closing round 66, Lauren Stephenson posted her best finish of the season with a T-8th at the ISPS Handa World Invitational. Stephenson now has 6 Top 10 finishes on the LPGA Tour.

Both D1 Softball and Extra Innings Softball are reporting that the University of Memphis is expected to name Stephanie VanBrakle Prothro as its new head softball coach. The Memphis job has been vacant since Natalie Poole resigned in mid-June after 11 seasons. VanBrakle Prothro, a stand-out two-way player at Alabama, has served as Alabama’s pitching coach since 2012.

Cobie Vance followed up last night’s 4-hit performance with the 3-hit outing today. Vance’s hits today included a bases-clearing double.

Peter Berry has been named to the USA roster for the upcoming IWBF World Championships in Dubai in November. Berry is also playing for the US U-23 team in international competition this fall.

Haylie McCleney remains in 2nd place in the Athletes Unlimited Softball’s individual point standings through Week 3. She’ll be a captain again for Week 4. Draft for Week 4 is tomorrow.
