Saketh Myneni and partner Yuki Bhambri survived two match points to win the finals at the ATP Bangkok Challenger in three sets, 2-6, 7-6 (9-7), 1-0 (14-12). Myneni and Bhambri have now won 6 Challenger titles together, dating back to early 2022. For his career, Myneni has now won 33 professional doubles titles (18 on Futures Tour and 15 Challenger events). Myneni will move up to a career-best 74th in next week’s ATP doubles rankings.
Former Alabama walk-on Ty Reed, who is now a member of the USA Handball team, was part of a historic first for the team this weekend. Team USA defeated Morocco 28-27 at the Handball World Cup competition in Jönköping, Sweden for its first-ever win at a world championship. The United States had lost its previous 25 matches.
Kalia Antoniou was awarded Cyprus Sports Writers Association Female Leader of the Year Award earlier this week in Nicosia. Olivia Fotopoulou finished a close second in the voting. Antoniou won two medals at the Oran Mediterranean Games (a gold in the 50 meter freestyle and a bronze in the 100 meter freestyle). At World Championships in Budapest, she became the first athlete from Cyprus to qualify for the semifinals in an event, which she did twice, in both the 50 meter freestyle and 100 meter freestyle. Fotopoulou was recognized for medaling in three events and the Mediterranean games.
Galin Smith and Kataja Basket won the Finnish Suomen Cup finals today, 86-84 in overtime, over the Helsinki Seagulls. Smith finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds.
