News

Former Alabama baseball player Chris Smelley was reported missing earlier today by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office in Florida. Smelley was reported to be last seen kayaking in the Gulf of Mexico. However, later this evening, the WCSO reported that Smelley was found safe by the US Coast Guard!

Major League Baseball opened its 2024 season today. Two former Alabama players are on Opening Day rosters – David Robertson with the Texas Rangers, and Spencer Turnbull with the Philadelphia Phillies. Matt Foster begins the season on the Chicago White Sox’s 60-Day Injured List as he recovers from elbow surgery, and is expected back around mid-season.

With his appearance tonight for Texas, David Robertson has now pitched in 16 major league seasons. That ties him with Tommy Hunter for the most by an Alabama pitcher. Luke Sewell, who played in 20 seasons, primarily as a catcher, holds the record for all Alabama players.

Wilson Furr shot an opening round 64 at the Houston Open and has a share of the lead at -6. The 64 marks Furr’s lowest-ever round on the PGA Tour. Davis Riley is -5, T3rd.

Krystal Rivers and Allianz MTV Stuttgart advanced to the Volley Bundesliga semifinals with a 2-match sweep over Münster.
