David Robertson announced today via his social media accounts that he is retiring from baseball. Robertson played for 8 teams over the course of 17 seasons, and finished his career with 179 saves and 206 holds. He is 6th all-time in holds recorded (stat started circa 1999), and is the only player in MLB history with 175+ saves and 175+ holds. Over the course of his career, he won a World Series with the New York Yankees in 2009, made an All-Star Game in 2011 (also as a member of the Yankees), won a World Baseball Classic gold medal in 2017, and a silver medal in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
In addition to his accomplishments on the field, Robertson should be also be lauded for the work of his foundation, High Socks for Hope. High Socks for Hope provides basic living needs for victims of natural disasters. Robertson launched the foundation in response to the 2011 tornados that impacted Alabama (and his hometown of Tuscaloosa in particular), and the foundation continues its work today.
David Robertson has announced his retirement after 17 seasons, one All-Star selection, and a 2009 #WorldSeries championship with the @Yankees.
