Daily Recap – January 29, 2023

News

With the Philadelphia Eagles’ 31-7 win over San Francisco in the NFC Conference Championship Game, Jalen Hurts, DeVonta Smith, Landon Dickerson, and Josh Jobe have advanced to Super Bowl LVII. Hurts will be the 4th Alabama alumnus to start a Super Bowl game, but the first since Super Bowl XI in January 1977. Previous Alabama starters (all of whom won and are in the Hall of Fame) are Bart Starr (Super Bowls I and II), Joe Namath (Super Bowl II), and Ken Stabler (Super Bowl XI). Hurts will be the first Alabama quarterback to appear in a Super Bowl since Jeff Rutledge, who was Washington’s backup QB and holder in Super Bowl XXVI.

DeVonta Smith’s one-handed grab on a fourth-down conversion on the first drive of the game set the tone for the Eagles early.

San Francisco’s loss means that teams can now do in-person interviews with DeMeco Ryans for vacant head coaching positions. Ryans previously did remote interviews with Houston and Denver, and canceled interviews with Indianapolis and Arizona to concentrate on game prep during the divisional round. Ryans is believed to be the top choice in Houston, where he previously starred as a player.

Anton McKee completed a sweep of the three breaststroke events at the Reykjavík International Games today. McKee won both the 200m Breaststroke and the 50m Breaststroke today to go with along with his win in the 100m Breaststroke yesterday.

Kira Lewis got extended minutes tonight and posted a season-high 15 points for New Orleans.
